Douglas Griffin
 Certified Environmental Trainer

Doug joined GWWI as the Water Training Specialist in April of 1999. He instructs the Water Treatment, Distribution, and Cross Connection/Backflow Prevention courses. Doug's experience comes from the State of Tennessee, where he was a water and wastewater instructor at the Fleming Training Center. His experience includes both ground water and surface water treatment plant O & M; water and wastewater laboratory testing; and distribution system operation and maintenance. 


Doug holds both a Georgia Class I Water license and Distribution Systems Operator license, a Georgia Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certificate, and has served as a Georgia Backflow Proctor since 2001.  He also holds the highest Tennessee certificates in Water Treatment (Grade IV) and Distribution Systems (Grade II), a State of Tennessee Backflow Testers Certificate, as well as the American Backflow Prevention Association's National Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certificate.  In addition to being a member of the Ga. Water & Pollution Control Association, Doug is a member of the National Environmental Trainers Association, American Water Works Association, and American Backflow Prevention Association. Doug is listed as a Certified Environmental Trainer through the National Environmental Trainers Association.

Michael Freund
 Environmental Training Specialist

Michael A. Freund joined GWWI as the Wastewater Training Specialist in November of  2002.  Mike is responsible for training involving all areas of wastewater operations. His other duties include development of training curricula and research concerning new innovations and process updates. Mike has over fifteen years of experience in wastewater facility operations.

 
He is certified in the state of Georgia as a Class I Wastewater Treatment System Operator, Class I Water Treatment System Operator and Wastewater Laboratory Analyst. Mike also has been heavily involved in emergency response and planning including confined space entry and rescue, chemical spill mitigation and security.

Before coming to GWWI, Mike was employed at the Columbia County Water & Sewerage System. He was employed there for 13 years and started at a position of Operator Trainee and worked up to Plant Manager and eventually to Training / Safety Manager. As Training / Safety Manager, Mike was responsible for the training of over 80 employees concerning all fields of water and wastewater operations as well as the safety compliance training and performing the duties of Chief for the department's HAZMAT Response Team. Mike has had involvement with many other areas of environmental projects, including plan reviews, macro- invertebrate stream assessments, watershed assessments and system management. 

Mike is a member of GW&PCA and is an active member of the GW&PCA Plant of the Year Inspection Committee.

Joel Peacock
 Director of Operations

Joel Peacock joined the staff of the Georgia Water & Pollution Control Association (GW&PCA) in March of 1992. The GW&PCA, a not-for-profit association based in Cobb County, was founded in 1932 and has grown into a membership of over 5,000 operators, contractors, manufacturers' representatives, engineers, elected officials, industry representatives and others concerned with water resources in Georgia.

 
In 1999, the revitalization and management of the Georgia Water & Wastewater Institute (GWWI) was placed under Joel’s direction. GWWI, a subsidiary of GW&PCA, provides extensive water & wastewater training classes for approximately 2,000 water professionals per year around the state of Georgia.

In addition to GWWI, Joel is also the Director of Operations for the GW&PCA which includes duties such as site-selection, marketing, housing, budgeting and on-site management for 15-20 meetings per year including conventions, trade shows, training seminars, board meetings and executive planning retreats. In addition to meeting management, Joel is responsible for the management of the Georgia Backflow Prevention Tester Certification Program and the Associations information and technology operations including two local area networks. Joel serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Cobb County Convention & Visitors Bureau and is a member of the Georgia Society of Association Executives, and the Meeting Professionals International.

Prior to joining the GW&PCA staff, Joel was a Computer Specialist for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division for 5 ½ years.
